Big Wins for TDCJ Employees: New Leave Benefits Take Effect September 1, 2025
AFSCME Texas Corrections is proud to share two important policy updates that will provide more flexibility for TDCJ employees. These changes, effective September 1, 2025, are the result of persistent advocacy from AFSCME TX Corrections to ensure our members don’t lose the benefits they’ve earned.
Legislative Leave Pool (LLP)
Correctional employees in the Correctional Career Path series will have access to a Legislative Leave Pool (LLP).
- Employees may contribute up to 8 hours of vacation or comp time per year into the pool.
- Retiring employees can also donate unused time to strengthen the pool.
- Members may withdraw up to 80 hours per cycle (480 hours per year) to participate in legislative activities with an eligible association.
- Withdrawals require sponsorship by an association that represents correctional employees and meets specific criteria.
This program ensures that officers and staff have the time and support to participate in legislative work that directly impacts their careers, working conditions, and the safety of our facilities.
Comp Time Rollover
In another major step forward, unused comp time will no longer be lost.
- Beginning September 1, 2025, any comp time not used within 24 months will automatically roll into your vacation balance.
- This change applies to all employees, regardless of when the time was earned.
- While employees still cannot receive a cash payout for comp time, this new rule ensures that hours worked are never wasted.
What This Means for You
These victories represent progress for TDCJ employees who deserve fair treatment for their time and labor. By protecting comp time and creating the LLP, we’ve secured new tools to help employees balance their personal, professional, and advocacy responsibilities.
